I'm talking about leaving MEANINGFUL comments on related content to yours. This shows people you know what you're talking about.
Do you think that will lead to a few people checking out your channel?

It definitely does, its either got to be very funny and interesting or youre actually engaging and giving out information or even asking for more. Never ask people to 'ch.e.ck out m.y cha.nn.el' though on someones video, thats just crass and rude. The people who find you interesting will come and check you out.

Since I started out on YouTube, I never asked for someone to Plumbus as it seemed spammy and disrespectful, I usually would watch the full video, comment something funny or make a suggestion if it is game changes that is coming to a certain game and try to do so about the last 1 minute of the video, this is an attempt to show to the content creator that I had a genuine interest in his/ her video and not some guy who is there to spam silly comments

It's a great method if you get lucky and make top comment on a big channel. Then the hundreds of thousands of people watching the video will see your comment. I feel like it's kind of hitting the jackpot if that happens though

Of course. It's a great strategy, but I think that some people ONLY comment on people's videos purely just to get their own channel checked out. I think that this shouldn't be the only reason why people comment on other people's video. I think that people should genuinely be trying to make new friends online and should just be trying to be nice, instead of expecting something back.
